No, Cardinal O’Brien, this *IS* what we expect of you

March 4, 2013

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, sexual offenderOn Sunday, March 3, 2013, Cardinal Keith O’Brien of the Roman Catholic church issued a statement explaining why he had resigned (asked by the pope, in fact), a few days earlier. (Cardinal Keith O’Brien admits and apologises for sexual misconduct)

One of the things he said was this:

[T]here have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal

Well, let’s see, Keith.

  1. Cardinal Bernard Law in Boston – Sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic archdiocese of Boston – abuse by several priests and then coverups and sheltering and moving those priests to other dioceses to continue the abuse
  2. Father Brendan Smyth – a forty-year history of sexually abusing boys in his care
  3. The Christian Brothers – sexual abuse of Canadian kids at the Mount Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland and at their schools in Ontario
  4. Roger Vangheluwe, Bishop of Bruges – confession of sexual abuse of two nephews, very “coincidentally” after the statute of limitations had run out, so he was never, ever prosecuted
  5. Bishop Raymond Lahey of Canada – caught at airport with computer full of images of child pornography, where many sexual acts were committed using Catholic symbols
  6. Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles and Msgr. Thomas J. Curry (most recently bishop of Santa Barbara) – conspiracy to cover up priestly abuse and to shield sexual abusers from police – but hey, Mahony still gets to go to the Vatican to decide who the next leader of the Catholic church will be!
  7. Need we actually go on with the massive, extensive, apparently endless list…?

So no, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, you do NOT get to say that your sexual misconduct is not what is “expected of you” as a priest, archbishop, and cardinal. Given the long, sordid, clearly coordinated history of priestly sexual abuse and coverup in your church — this is EXACTLY what we expect of you.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men’s] bones, and of all uncleanness.

Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. – Matthew 23: 27-28
