Whited Sepulchres: American “Family” Association, Mission America, and “Family” Research Center

October 22, 2010

In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. — Matthew 2:18

You’ve just gotta know that after several gay teenagers were recently harassed and bullied so badly by anti-gay people that they were driven to suicide, the anti-gay crowd had several brainstorming meetings that went like this: “Quick, how can we spin this to our advantage, and portray ourselves as the souls of compassion while the harassment and bullying literally to death of the gay kids is actually the gays’ own fault??

Well, sure enough…

I’m not going to quote them myself since their enthusiasm for blaming gay people for their own harassment and death is so sickening and odious. But you can read all about it in this HATEWATCH post: Religious Right Claims Gay Advocates to Blame for Suicides.

There’s so much evidence that being gay is not something people go out and “choose,” any more than the anti-gay people chose to be heterosexual. When I came out of fundamentalism, I became acquainted with probably close to 100 gay people within a few months, and decided to ask as many as possible when they knew they were gay. The vast majority of them said between the ages of nine and twelve. You can NOT tell me that these kids just deliberately “decided” to “adopt a lifestyle” that would get them harassed, bullied, and beaten up, and would force them to hide in fear for their lives! And my anecdotal evidence is echoed over and over and over and over again, in countless hundreds and thousands of young lives.

Yet the religious anti-gay crowd insists on lying and claiming that being gay is a “choice,” and it’s the advocates for EQUAL CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS FOR GAY PEOPLE who somehow “caused” these kids to be harassed and bullied and driven to suicide. And apparently it had nothing to do with the teachings of the Religious Right, that these people are wicked and deserve to die and deliberately chose to live wickedly — blah blah blah. Oh no, that had nary a thing to do with anything.

It’s stunning to watch these marketers at work, attempting to feed off the blood of those they have helped destroy. Remember Jerry Falwell’s comment to Mel White, that the Religious Right made such profit from the existence of homosexuals that “if they didn’t exist, we’d have had to invent them”?

I have gazed into the face of evil, and these “Christians” have stared back at me.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Matthew 7:21-23

Talking Points Memo reported today (Nov. 24) that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which tracks hundreds of hate groups, has now officially designated the Family Research Council as a hate group, principally for its all-out maligning of gay people.
